Round 2 of our engagement is now closed.

Thank you to everyone who provided input through our online survey, attended a community meeting, and/or emailed your comments!

The SMARTer Mobility Team is currently analyzing all of the data we collected from the public, community leaders, and SMART staff and operators to create a preferred SMARTer bus network. We anticipate releasing the SMARTer Bus Network in early 2025.

The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) is Southeast Michigan's regional bus system. SMART was created in 1967 under Public Act 204 as Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority (SEMTA). In 1989 Public Act 481 of 1988 amended Public Act 204, reorganizing SEMTA without the City of Detroit and SEMTA was renamed the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART).

SMART provides different types of transit services including; Fixed Route, Connector and ADA Paratransit and Community Transit services that have a combined ridership of nearly 11 million riders annually. Operating 234 Fixed Route buses on 47 routes, 7 days a week, 22 hours a day, SMART buses keep the region moving. Connector is designed for seniors and people with disabilities who can't access SMART's regular Fixed Route service. Additionally, our Community Partnership Program (CPP), offers a partnership with 76 municipalities and organizations to support local transit service by leveraging federal funding and returning those funds back to local communities to build their own transit program.

What is the SMARTer Mobility Program

The SMARTer Mobility Program is an innovative initiative designed to enhance the current bus service by extending its reach to areas that may not warrant a traditional fixed-route bus system. The program addresses a crucial gap in public transportation, particularly for communities where the demand may not be sufficient for regular bus routes but where people still require access to recreational, educational, or employment opportunities. By reducing or even eliminating bus wait times, this flexible transportation option aims to make public transit more convenient and accessible for all. This not only empowers individuals who rely on public transport but also encourages a shift away from private car use, contributing to more sustainable urban mobility.

The program will consist of a comprehensive evaluation of all SMARTs mobility modes, infrastructure, and routes.
